Be Prepared For Side Effects If You Chose Any Teeth Whitening Solution
Look in any large supermarket or drugstore and you will find many, many teeth whitening products on the shelves. They are all easy to use, the instructions are all simple to follow and, unlike many other types of products, most of these will actually work.
Add to that the low cost of most of these solutions and there looks like there can be no problems finding a whitening solution – but let’s not be too quick – we need to understand if there are side effects associated with these products.
There are two main types. Regular toothpaste that comes in a tube (juts like your daily toothpaste) and “strips” that are fitted over the teeth, left on for about 30 minutes, and then removed.
Now, no matter which option you chose, they all follow a similar process which is the “bleaching” of teeth to remove stains and make them look whiter. And here is where the problems come into play. Bleaching, depending on the chemicals used to perform it, can attack the tooth enamel leading to tooth decay, sensitivity and, yes, even pain.
After continued use of whitening products you will the most usual side effects are teeth sensitivity and gum irritation. This, as you may already know, can be very painful and cause discomfort when you drink hot or cold drinks – and in some cases, just breathing in cold air can be painful. These side effects will generally lessen in a few days and disappear completely after your whitening regime has completed. If this does not happen, or your gums start to bleed, you should visit your dentist immediately.
Let’s now look at the longer-term issue of enamel and tooth decay. One of the ingredients of whitening toothpaste is SLS. This has been known, when used over longer periods of time, to attack the enamel and therefore cause tooth decay. The way to avoid this problem is usually to follow the directions given with the product. People have a tendency to overuse whitening products and enamel decay is usually a side effect of doing just this. Follow the instructions to the letter and you should not have any issues.
Other possible teeth whitening side effects are stomach issues. If you swallow too much of the product by accident it may have a nasty reaction and even cause you to physically vomit. Be careful, err on the side of caution and make sure you do not swallow any of the whitening toothpaste or gel or whatever substance you are using.
In conclusion, the vast majority of teeth whitening products you will find in the supermarket do actually work and if you follow the instructions carefully you should have zero teeth whitening side effects.
